Hello

I see you across the canal,

I see you over the fields,

their sparse grass blowing gently in the wind,

I see you

sitting amongst the ruins of the compound,

its crumbling walls providing little respite against the heat of a midday sun.

I see you

crouched low behind a pile of mud bricks,

your rag-covered head,

your cheek resting on the Dragonoff,

your eye glued to its sight,

while you try to see me.

But you don’t see me

lying in this hole

half covered by stinking mud,

quietly watching the dust swirl across the track,

judging the wind,

the range,

continually adjusting,
